This study was set to investigate the factors influencing alcohol abuse among out-of-school adolescents in Katanga slum Wandegeya, Kampala Capital City Authority.
OBJECTIVE
To assess factors influencing alcohol consumption among out-of-school adolescents in Katanga slum, Wandegeya.
METHOD
A cross-sectional study was conducted in Katanga slum among out-of-school adolescents aged 10 to 19 years. Simple random sampling method was used to collect the data from a target population of out-of-school adolescents in Katanga slum, of which 248 adolescents were randomly selected to make the sample.
The collected data was analyzed and presented using SPSS (Statistical Packages for Social Science).
RESULTS.
Results showed that 42% of the respondents admitted to currently taking alcohol while 59% said no. 53.4% of respondents admitted taking alcohol on a daily basis, 17.8% consumed alcohol once a week,13.8% took every 2 – 3 days,7.5% admitted to taking alcohol once a month and every two months, this group of individuals were found to be non addicts or binge drinkers.
CONCLUSION
The study found out that there is a strong association between parental or adult guidance or supervision and alcohol abuse among adolescents. The lack of enforcement of minimum legal drinking age also influences alcohol abuse among adolescents. Health education acts as a protective factor from alcohol use and one of the many consequences of alcohol use was having unprotected sex which exposes young people to HIV/AIDS.
The researcher made the following recommendations; establishment of mentorship programs for youth, creation of jobs for the youth, regulation of local producers of alcohol and enforcement of the legal drinking ages (18) and policy. The researcher also suggested for further research to be carried out on ways to be undertaken to curb alcohol abuse among youths. | en_US |
