dc.description.abstractThis was a descriptive cross sectional study done to assess the factors affecting domestic waste disposal methods used by the residents of wakiso town council and give recommendations in any deficiencies pertaining to the subject. The specific objectives of the study were to assess knowledge factors, identifying individual factors, find out administrative factors and sociodemographic affecting domestic waste disposal among the residents of the residents of wakiso town council. Simple random sampling method was used to select 246 respondents from the households of wakiso town council. Data was collected on the knowledge levels, demographic statistics; individual factors and administrative factors. Questionnaires were used as tools for data collection. The population which was studied included both males and females residents of wakiso town council aged 15years and above. The data was then analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) version 16.0. The results of the findings indicated that, although majority (58.1%) of the respondents were female and only 41.9% were male. Also majority of respondents, 223 (90.7%) reported to have knowledge as regards domestic waste management while only 23 (9.3%) did not. Crude method was the most known and used method of waste disposal by the respondents with 67.1%, followed by composition of wastes representing 17.5%, burning followed with 10.6% of respondents preferred to use it and lastly only 4.8% of the study population preferred to use controlled tripping as a method for waste disposal. Most of the households, 138 (56.1%) generated bulk waste while 69 (28%) reported to generated light waste. Other households, 39 (15.9%) were not sure of the quantity of domestic waste they generated. Majority of the respondents,201 (81.7%) reported to get assistance with waste disposal from the Town council while 45 (18.3%) reported not to get any assistance. In conclusion, although residents were adequately knowledgeable on the different issues surrounding the domestic waste management in the community where they lived and regular assistance from the town council in waste management in wakiso town, more educational sessions as regards waste segregating and recycling of waste should be constantly conducted and lastly town council should construct domestic waste recycling facilities.en_US
