Quality of Services for the Physically Disabled and Their Effects on Performance of Students in Selected Secondary Schools in Mukono Municipality.
Abstract
The study dealt with the quality of services for the physically disabled and their effects on performance of students in secondary schools in Mukono Municipality.
The study was concerned with examining the availability and adequacy of the services provided to students with physical disabilities in secondary schools, and assessing the performance of students with physical disabilities in secondary schools.
The study adopted an analytical cross sectional study design where quantitative and qualitative approach to data collection and analysis were use. Data presentation was done using frequency tables where percentages based on tallies were generated. It was upon these percentages that reporting is done.
The study found out that there was gross existence of facilities for students with physical disabilities. Physical disabilities are not catered for in secondary schools. Only facilities for normal students are provided.
The study also established that the existing facilities in schools are not in adequate amounts. Few schools are able to put facilities specially designed for disabled students.
The study concluded that disabled students are able to perform well despite the physical challenges they face. Due to poor school setting, schools do not provide special lessons or aid students in their academic efforts.
The study recommends immediate spending on secondary schools maintenance and repair of areas that students with disabilities use. This will help the economy and improve education quality and even health. Educators must be committed to closing the achievement gap, while at the same time having safe, up-to-date, quality facilities.
The study also recommends that the government continues to provide needed funding that supports local educational efforts and to help build and modernize school facilities. School facilities guidelines should be developed through collaborative process with educators and interested persons dealing with design, construction and maintenance of school facilities.
