Knowledge and attitudes of Mothers Towards Cesarean Section Delivery:

Abstract

This research is about knowledge and attitudes of mothers attending antenatal care at St.Paul‟s Health Centre IV in Kasese district. The main objective was to assess knowledge and attitudes of mothers attending antenatal care towards caesarean section delivery while the specific objectives were the following; To determine the proportion of mothers attending ANC at St.Paul‟s Health who would accept to have caesarean section delivery if need arises, to determine the knowledge of mothers attending St.Paul‟s heath centre IV towards caesarean section delivery and to determine the attitudes of mother attending ANC at St.Paul‟s Health towards undergoing caesarean section delivery. In this study, 110 mothers were interviewed. All the mothers had come to attend antenatal care. All the mothers 110(100%) had ever heard about caesarean section delivery but had never been educated about it. 108(98.2%) of the mothers said that women are likely to die during caesarean section delivery unlike vaginal delivery and would not recommend it. Majority of the mothers 78(70.9%) had never undergone caesarean section delivery interviewed only 32(29.1%) mothers had undergone it. Conclusion The knowledge of women attending ANC at St.Paul‟s Health Centre IV regarding CS delivery is still low. The results showed that a large proportion of mothers still are ignorant about the use of CS delivery and have negative attitudes towards the life saving procedure although a few were knowledgeable. Recommendations In order to reduce the number of maternal deaths during labor in Kasese district, the following recommendations have been forwarded: The study recommends that continuous education about CS delivery should be given to all mothers attending ANC at St. Paul‟s Health Centre IV.
